Augusto Pinochet (1915-2006) ousted the government of the Socialist Salvadore Allende. The main football stadium was turned into a concentration camp where an estimated 5,000 people were executed in the first days of his rule and many more were missing. Pinochet ruled over Chile until 1990 after he was defeated in the 1988 plebiscite. At the time of his death, numerous criminal charges were pending against him for human rights abuses and corruption...
