On this day, September 11, 1973 in Chile by a military coup Augusto Pinochet (1915-2006) ousted the government of the Socialist Salvadore Allende. The main football stadium was turned into a concentration camp where an estimated 5,000 people were executed in the first days of his rule and many more were missing.
